What does a fashion stylist actually do?

The path to your creative dream job!

What can I expect from the job of fashion stylist?

The profession of fashion stylist is highly diverse and can be divided into several areas. These include personal stylists, stylists for labels/lookbook shoots, and editorial stylists.

Personal Stylist (Personal Shopper)

Celebrities usually have their personal stylists dress them in the latest red carpet looks. The personal stylist not only selects stylish clothing, but also ensures that the client's look is perfectly matched and the outfits are tailored to the occasion, ensuring they are always perfectly styled. Therefore, a personal stylist must always be up-to-date and familiar with current trends. Personal shopping is a big part of this job, as is organizing and structuring your closet. Therefore, in addition to a good understanding of fashion, you should also have a certain understanding of human nature.

Label stylist

As the name suggests, brand stylists work for companies that want to represent their fashion label through their models' clothing and advertising campaigns. They aim to appeal to specific target groups, which is why customers usually have specific expectations. You are expected to capture the brand's style and convey the right message with your styling. The company must be able to identify with your styling, and of course, the label's clothing will be chosen. However, every fashion stylist can also set new trends with their looks.

Editorial Stylist/Fashion Editor

The photo series you've probably seen in fashion magazines are styled by so-called editorial stylists. You typically work for a fashion magazine and style cool looks using individual items of clothing or collections from fashion designers that harmonize with each other and create a coherent image in the photo series. The idea is to tell a story and showcase the selected fashion as best as possible. In addition to the styling, it's also important to pay attention to the image composition and the order of the images within the photo series. Fashion stylists often set trends through the styling of the looks.

Fashion stylist for casual wear

The outfits shown in online shops, lookbooks, or e-commerce are also styled by fashion stylists. Fashion labs expect their stylists to independently arrange the outfits on mannequins, busts, or as lay-out sets so that they are presented attractively to customers. Entire fashion collections must be styled here.
